As you can see from the pictures, I had some pretty significant rust damage on this piece (and this piece alone). The problem is that it is a hollow piece made out of sheet metal, which leaves can get trapped in and hold onto moisture. I also drove it in winter for a while, with salt and whatnot on the roads, with a damaged engine splash guard for a while. You can see from the pics, the majority of the damage was to the rear face of it. It is attached to the car by both spot welds and bolts. The 6 bolts attaching it go through the front tow hooks/loops - whatever you want to call them. The spot welds are on the inner and undersides of the frame rail. There are additional spot welds holding it to the bracket that the tow hooks attach to. You'll see what i mean when you get into it, it was very obvious. I first cut out the center section with a sawzall to take the outward pressure off of the spot welds. Other than that, wear eye and ear protection, use good, sharp cold chisels, and a 5 pound sledge hammer.
